BA1: Weathered
My first project is located in New Brighton, Merseyside, the area was once a bustling, lively seaside resort which has run into a steady decline. However, the area still has a heart and is a hub for independent shops and cafes with a vibrant street art scene. The site sits between two 1950s seaside properties and sits behind a public park area just stepped back from the waterfront.
The project ‘weathered’ responds to the sea nearby and utilizes a canyon/ riverbed like formation dividing the site in half. A stepped rammed earth construction sits above a steel frame and the exterior rigid rammed earth walls would smooth over time like pebbles in the ocean. The two halves are connected on the first floor by a sculptural bridge. Passing under this bridge and flowing the curve of the building you arrive at steps leading up to a raised café and garden which provide views over the building and the seafront.
The space is occupied by a large art gallery, rentable workshop spaces for art lessons, private studios for artists, a shop selling local art and a café overlooking the building and the waterfront.
