BA2: An Archive At The End Of The World
This second year project was based in the town of Birkenhead, Merseyside across the river from Liverpool, the site is situated at the end of a Highstreet with pubs and independent cafes . This project is the creation of an archive specializing in the field of science fiction. An archive is the storage of cultural material such as artifacts, books and artwork that are deemed to be culturally significant. In this archive the main attraction will be the original handwritten manuscript of the ‘Day of the Triffids’ by John Wyndham. This is a post apocalyptic novel where the world is thrown into chaos from a simultaneous mass blinding and the release of man-eating plants.
In this project I wanted to explore the distortion of scale frequently seen in science fiction architecture, to depict this I developed large concrete fins which I cast in plaster. The fins act as the bones of the building like some long lost carcass which the timber frame colonizes.
